Success Story #8 | Prototype Sensor Actuator Array for Li-S Cells

From single sensors to coordinated arrays

HEALING BAT’s WP3 has reached the third Milestone of the project with a prototype sensor‑actuator array purpose‑built for Li–S cells. This array brings together embedded sensing and actuation elements, moving beyond individual microsensors toward an integrated platform that can measure in‑cell conditions and initiate self‑healing actions. This integrated platform represents a major leap toward real-time corrective behaviour inside working batteries.

Why this milestone matters

WP3 is responsible for sensor development, embedded instrumentation, and two-way smart communications at the battery component level, enabling a system that not only monitors cell health but can also activate healing actions when needed. This directly advances HEALING BAT’s “materials + sensors + BMS” toolbox and supports the BATTERY2030+ vision for smart battery functionalities.

Building on earlier thin film successes

In Success Story #1, HEALING BAT announced ~30 µm thin film prototype sensors that are integration ready for pouch cells. The new array milestone extends that progress by combining multiple sensing points with actuation capabilities, paving the way for operando validation and BMS driven control. This step is essential to achieving predictive, repair-oriented battery management.
