Success Story #5 | Turning Li-S Failure Maps into a Design Playbook for “Sense & Repair”

 Share this on:

By systematically mapping how Li-S cells degrade – from polysulfide shuttling and cathode cracking to SEI‑driven anode pulverization – HEALING BAT created a practical design playbook that is already shaping our embedded sensors, self‑healing strategies, and pouch‑cell validation. This playbook forms the scientific backbone for the next generation of intelligent Li-S battery design.

What’s new

A consolidated failure mechanisms report for Li-S cells (cathode, anode, liquid/solid electrolytes, pouch cells) pinpoints where and what we must sense and heal in real operation. Highlights include:

  • Cathode: capacity loss driven by polysulfide dissolution/migration, electrode cracking, surface heterogeneous reactions.
  • Anode: dendrite growth, repeated SEI re‑formation, and dead‑Li drive rapid loss; Li thickness materially affect cycling stability.
  • Electrolytes (liquid & solid): polysulfides degrade ionic conductivity, wetting, viscosity; solid electrolytes face crack‑induced ionic pathway losses and dendrite penetration.
  • Pouch cells: lean E/S, high areal loading and low N/P accelerate heterogeneity, poor wetting, and gas generation (e.g., H₂S) – key realities our sensors must capture.

These insights are already shaping our next prototypes – bringing smart sensing and self‑healing out of the lab and into working battery cells that last longer and perform more reliably.
