From mechanisms to materials that heal
In WP2, HEALING BAT has reached a key inflection point: first‑generation operative self‑healing components are now available to enter testing and integration workflows! These are the first Li-S targeted self-healing materials in the project capable of real-world validation, marking a transition from concept to deployable technology.
These components are informed by an extensive analysis of degradation mechanisms across cathodes, anodes, separators, and electrolytes, targeting the interfaces and structures that govern Li-S performance and ageing.
A portfolio of healing strategies
The initial set spans SEI‑focused interventions, polymer‑enabled self‑healing and surface‑layer/interface treatments, approaches that are compatible with battery manufacturing constraints and directly address failure modes observed in Li-S. Together, they provide a scientifically robust “menu” of options for improving cycle life, safety, and reliability.
This is consistent with the project’s component‑level mandate in WP2 and its broader materials + sensors + BMS toolbox philosophy.
Teamwork across Europe
Led by Helmholtz‑Zentrum Berlin (HZB), the milestone benefited from the complementary capabilities of IREC, TU Dortmund, TU Delft, PSI, CPI, and SupraPolix, reflecting HEALING BAT’s cross‑disciplinary approach and Horizon Europe design. This distributed effort highlights how European expertise accelerates the development of next generation battery materials.
Next stop: integration and operando validation
After internal validation, the self‑healing components will be paired with WP3’s embedded sensors and assembled into WP4 prototypes for cycling tests and advanced analytics—a critical step to define reliable healing markers and triggers that will later inform WP5’s BMS and Digital Twin. This will be the first time that healing strategies, smart sensing, and digital control converge in Li-S cells.
This staged integration aligns with the project’s roadmap and the BATTERY2030+ “smart functionalities” theme.
