HEALING BAT takes part in Battery 2030+, the European initiative to invent the sustainable batteries of the future

The HEALING BAT project takes part in Battery 2030+, a large-scale research initiative to make Europe a world leader in the development and production of the sustainable batteries of the future, which will store more energy, have a longer life, be safer and more environmentally friendly than today’s batteries.

The resulting batteries will facilitate the transition towards a climate-neutral society based on clean energy and a circular economy. This is a part of what is envisaged in the European Green Deal, as well as the European Action Plan on Batteries and the European SET-plan. Moreover, they will improve the competitiveness of battery cell industries in the European Union.

Running since 2018 and led by Uppsala University, over €150 million in funding have been awarded so far to cutting-edge projects which will be coordinated to collaborate by the Battery 2030+ initiative.

The new research projects from 2023 on, including HEALING BAT, are launched under the BATT4EU Partnership, which is receiving up to €220 million in funding under the Horizon Europe programme to develop advanced green battery technology.

This Partnership is based on Battery 2030+’s long-term Roadmap for battery research, which outlines research actions and battery technology for real-world applications as part of a European effort to establish battery cell manufacturing, focusing on a chemistry-enabling approach, including lithium-based, post-lithium, solid-state, silicon, sodium, and future chemistries.

HEALING BAT’s contributions to Battery 2030+

The HEALING BAT’s team will establish synergies with the other projects that are part of Battery2030+ in order to maximise the impact of their common goals regarding research for future battery technologies. This includes:

  • Exchanging scientific knowledge and skills
  • Joining communication and dissemination efforts
  • Sharing exploitation and intellectual property rights (IPR) strategies
  • Establishing common guidelines and best practices for data sharing and FAIR data
  • Standardisation and educational curricula
  • Roadmap development, infrastructure and interoperability

Horizon2020 funding.
