Good Practice #2 | Lean electrolyte readiness: wetting assurance before you seal

 Share this on:

To reach high energy density, the programme pursues resource–efficient electrolyte strategies and higher target active-material loadings – the right direction, but unforgiving. Early pouches revealed the familiar pattern: wetting inconsistencies, uneven reaction behaviour, activation delays and later life instability. Instead of treating that as a “cost” of ambitious designs, we added a lightweight readiness gate right before sealing.

What we did

Instead of accepting that as the “cost” of lean-electrolyte designs, we added a lightweight readiness gate right before sealing. We introduced a short, friendly checklist – not a bureaucracy:

  • Build targets: document the key ratio targets for the sprint (qualitatively in public; parameters internal).
  • Wetting checks: quick visual (or dye) spot checks on sample stacks; advanced inspection when available.
  • Standardised protocol: specifying minimum rest time after filling and defined activation conditions (rate, temperature) before performance evaluation.
  • Instability awareness: note additives and temperature exposure that might elevate risk; give a simple escalation path if a cell looks or smells off.
  • Baselines: when arrays are present, capture a clean impedance, weight uniformity, performance, pressure and temperature baseline at time zero.

Why this is a good practice

Because it catches the fixable issues early, before we commit a full test cycle to a cell that was always going to struggle, preserving sprint time.

Transferability

This works for any energy dense pouch program: keep the gate short, insist on a photo/baseline, and set a clear pass/fail gate.
