On November 8th 2024, the Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya (IREC) co-organised a workshop about ‘In Situ/Operando Characterization of Chemical and Electrochemical Energy Processes‘ with the support of HEALING BAT, drawing in nearly 100 young scientists and researchers interested in expanding their knowledge of these techniques.
The session occurred at the ALBA Synchrotron Centre, a large research infrastructure in Cerdanyola del Vallès in Barcelona, Spain, which represents a fundamental pillar of the Spanish and European research arena, offering state-of-the-art instrumentation to academic and industrial users.
The workshop provided an overview of the capabilities and applications of various in situ and operando techniques in different energy processes, which are essential for observing and measuring dynamic changes within materials and systems under realistic operating conditions. As such, they offer detailed insights into energy conversion and storage processes, as well as real-time data on ongoing processes.
Attendees benefitted from gaining gain practical knowledge of specific techniques such as UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), vibrational spectroscopies, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, they had the opportunity to exchange experiences and network with other researchers, strengthening scientific bonds that could lead to future collaborations.

Among the organisers were ALBA Synchrotron, the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC), the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry (ICP-CSIC), the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the Institut de Física d’Altes Energies (IFAE), the In-situ Correlative Facility for Advanced Energy Materials project (INCAEM), and HEALING BAT’s partner the Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya (IREC). Moreover, the workshop was supported by the projects SyDECat, 2BoSS and HEALING BAT itself, funded by the European Union.
