HEALING BAT’s Battery2030+ sister projects SALAMANDER and PHOENIX recently celebrated their respective General Assemblies, to which HEALING BAT had been invited to present itself to the consortia.
The three projects are part of the large-scale research initiative Battery 2030+, which aims at making Europe a world leader in the development and production of the sustainable batteries of the future. Specifically, the three of them are dealing with battery sensors with the purpose of developing self-healing batteries.
The General Assembly of SALAMANDER was celebrated during the first week of April in Ljubljana, Slovenia; while the one of PHOENIX took place the second week of April in Würzburg, Germany.
In both cases, the meetings included a specific session in which HEALING BAT was presented, to increase awareness of it in the respective consortia and thus foster collaborations among the three Horizon Europe projects, hopefully leading to fruitful synergies. The HEALING BAT’s coordinator, Stefan Palzer from TU Dortmund, delivered a short introductory presentation of the project’s objectives and approaches.
Likewise, the projects SALAMANDER and PHOENIX will be presented during HEALING BAT’s 2nd General Assembly, to be held on 23-24 May at CIP‘s headquarters in Sedgefield, UK.
The SALAMANDER project revolutionizes Li-ion batteries (LIB) by integrating embedded sensors and self-healing capabilities to enhance their quality, reliability, and lifespan. Its innovative approach involves incorporating “smart” features into the battery, enabling it to analyze its degradation indicators and autonomously trigger self-healing responses with external stimuli.
Through the deployment of three types of sensors and two self-healing mechanisms, the project addresses the most damaging reactions typically encountered in LIBs.
The PHOENIX project aims to explore various possibilities for integrating self-healing, sensing, and triggering functionalities into batteries, to develop cells capable of living longer, detecting and preventing any kind of degradation, being more sustainable and less expensive.
Thanks to the integration of an advanced Battery Management System (BMS) into these functionalities, detecting different kinds of degradation in performance and evaluating the battery’s overall quality will be possible.
